As a new semester begins, television series start up for students to put off homework and enjoy spending some time in front of a TV with friends, family or by themselves.
Many shows have come and gone since TV has been around. Some do not last more than one season, and others have carried on season after season with cult followings.
One show that is beginning its much anticipated sixth and final season next week is “Lost.”
“Lost” ran its pilot Wednesday at 8 p.m. Sept. 22, 2004. From that day on, the show has continued to keep its audience captivated and has grown its fan base. Many diehard fans like Lisa Farley, Shores dorm mom, buy the seasons on DVD and actively recruit others to watch the show.
Farley began watching “Lost” during its second season after a friend recommended it to her. She purchased the first season and watched it with her daughter Lindsey.
“You see something new that you didn’t catch before every time you watch it, Farley said. “I’ve seen the first season at least six times.”
She said she is not ready for the show to end and worries that there will not be time within the season to answer all the questions the previous seasons have raised.
“You follow the characters, and they become your friends,” she said. “I’m very curious to see what is going to happen,” she said.
Others have made a family tradition of “Lost.” Julianne Pettey, a senior electrical engineering major, has watched all the seasons over past Christmas breaks with her family in Alaska.
“I really liked the first season,” Pettey said. “It reminded me of the Swiss Family Robinson with them having to fend for themselves on an island.”
There are also those who only recently got hooked on the show. Sam Cofer, a senior math and management information systems major, started watching the first season on the Internet with his girlfriend last semester.
“I had heard a lot about it, so we started in season one,” he said. “Now we are on the first episode of the season two.”
Cofer said he is excited about the upcoming sixth season, but it might be a little while until he gets caught up.
The sixth season will start Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. with a three-hour premier. Though the show boasts a complex storyline and characters with deeply detailed backgrounds, it is never too late to get “Lost.”
