Harding University has committed to celebrating Easter after a unanimous decision by Spring Sing directors to drop their shows for the first time since 1974. This decision has relieved many of the professors and staff on campus.
“Student’s have been exhausted in class,” Dr. Mac Sandlin, assistant professor of Bible and ministry, said. “Some will be unhappy that it was canceled so close to performance time, but I think in the end they will appreciate the chance to breathe for once and to celebrate something as important as our savior’s death and resurrection.”
Without Spring Sing, the 11,000 people that normally visit campus will remain at home, allowing the janitorial staff time to celebrate Easter, as well.
“I haven’t had the weekend off for Easter in seven years,” Aramark employee Matt Mason said. “It’s always, ‘Spring Sing this. Spring Sing that.’ There’s hardly enough time to eat, much less take a minute to relax.”
In a statement released yesterday, the University said the board agreed with the decision, saying it was time Harding observed the Easter holiday properly.
“People all across the country spend the weekend of April 17 celebrating Jesus and what he did for us,” the statement said. “And after 48 years, Harding is choosing to join the celebration. By doing so, we are postponing 2022 Spring Sing.”
Junior Wyatt Bennett, a Spring Sing director for men’s social club TNT, said he was happy Spring Sing was canceled because he and all the other directors were overworked. The directors declined to state who came up with the idea.
“I’ve had three all-nighters in a row, and I’m still behind,” Bennett said. “We don’t even have our song lyrics finalized. Half of the backing track is just people mumbling.”
Students are encouraged to attend the first annual Easter Celebration hosted on campus, held in the Benson Auditorium on Sunday, April 17, at 9 a.m.
