My deep love for Arkansas is rooted in 21 years of rich history that is filled with southern food, friendly faces, rice fields and county fairs. Unlike most Harding students, living in Searcy is nothing new to me, and I am often reminded of all the hidden gems that most students may never experience during their four years here. Therefore, since I do care deeply for my fellow students and their taste buds, I am going to share a few of my favorite restaurants and best-kept White County secrets.
1) KJ’s in Judsonia – If you’re hankering for catfish, hot bread, fried chicken and all the sides you can imagine, this quiet place is off the beaten path but well worth the short drive just past Walmart.
2) Country Kitchen in Kensett – This quaint little place, located in a gas station, I might add, has friendly service and southern food at its finest. Chicken and dressing, yams, green beans, mashed potatoes and strawberry cake are just a few of my favorites.
3) The Bulldog in Bald Knob – Before we know it, strawberry season will be upon us, which means the best strawberry shortcake in the state from this cute and classic diner.
4) Mr. Postman – This Searcy coffee shop not only sells an excellent cup of joe but also takes care of all of your postal needs. With great service and options, it provides another option for espresso from the usual venues.
One of my greatest joys in life is the experience of eating my favorite foods and sharing them with my favorite people. Grab a friend and get going to one of these sweet spots. They are sure to please and will give you a glimpse into the wonderful world of hidden gems in White County.
