Justin Timberlake scored his second No. 1 album of the year with the release of “The 20/20 Experience-2 of 2” on Sept. 27, 2013. This album is the second half of his “The 20/20 Experience” compilation and has sold more than 350,000 copies in its first week. Timberlake’s fourth studio album features 12 new songs written by Timberlake himself in collaboration with Timbaland.
Although it received mixed reviews, especially after the standards set by the success of its other half earlier this year, it seems as though dedicated Timberlake fans were eager to get their hands on more of his material.
Building on his last project, Timberlake keeps his pop tradition with a good mix of up-tempo tracks and smooth, slow songs. Opener “Gimme What I Don’t Know (I Want)” starts the album off with a fast beat and keeps the energy going with “True Blood” and “TKO.” His single “Take Back the Night,” released in July, is also included and adds a sleek R&B flavor to the album. Other songs to listen to are “Cabaret,” featuring Drake, and “Murder,” featuring Jay-Z.
Entertainment Wise calls this album a “more feisty and darker version” of its predecessor, which I absolutely agree with. Clocking in at 74:29, it is also a long listen. Many of the tracks had a lot of filler that could have been cut down.
It is without question though, that with the release of two No. 1 albums within less than seven months of each other, 2013 has definitely been Timberlake’s year.
