This semester, The American Studies Institute have invited to speak, Col. Dave Grossman on February 13 and Dr. Ben Carson on March 18.
Both of these men have distinguished stories to tell and lessons to teach in regards to the student body.
Col. Grossman will be addressing the significant increase in violence that has plagued our nation including the mass school shootings that have been reported over the past few years.
In his book, On Killing, Grossman talks about the rampant gun violence on television as well as the increased violence in video games that he believes is molding and forming this generation into a more killing-susceptible nation.
Dr. Bob Reely is the director of the American Studies Institute at Harding.
“I am quite fond of Dr. Grossman,” Dr. Reely said, “and I want everyone to come and see what he has to say. Not to scare them, but to be informed.”
Dr. Ben Carson will be on campus in March to share his story with the university. He has been named by TIME and CNN as one of the nations foremost physicians, as well as holding over 60 honorary doctorate degrees. Carson has one of the most inspiring stories of becoming something from nothing that has ever been told. Coming from a family with nothing, Carson was always encouraged to reach for greatness.
“It’s not that he is a role model for just a minority,” Dr. Reely said, “he is a role model for myself, he’s a role model for everyone.”
Dr. Carson will be giving his presentation the Tuesday after spring break in the Benson Auditorium.
