For most students going off to college is a big step in their journey toward adulthood. The lavish luxuries become a thing of the past for many and often times students will take on a job or two in order to keep up with new living expenses and extracurricular activities.
One of the things that make Harding great is the fact that there are ample job opportunities for students to take advantage of. Most departments on campus offer student positions of some sort.
“The Undergraduate Admissions team uses student ambassadors to help enter information in our database, to share their Harding experiences via phone, text, and social media, and to help host the thousands of student guests who visit the Harding campus each year,” Assistant VP for Enrollment Management Glenn Dillard said. “The more diverse our students ambassadors the better. We desire to hire all classifications, all majors and students from all geographic areas.”
Positions are sometimes filled quickly by returning employed students, but in other cases some students may graduate or simply choose not to work the following semester, which allows for new students to apply. One of the resounding tips for students is to try and apply for positions as early as possible.
“The earlier the better! We are nearly at capacity for fall 2015, have several hundred students who have already applied for fall 2016, and have received applications for undergraduate admission from students applying for 2017 and 2018. We hate telling a student they cannot attend because they waited too late to apply and we are full,” Dillard said.
Student positions vary on campus and can range from working in the library, computer labs and Heritage Inn just to name a few. Another department that offers student positions is Public Safety.
“We accept applications just right at the beginning of school, and usually within just a week or two at the most, we start interviewing so that we can get them hired and trained,” Deputy Director of Training, Edward Daughety said.
The positions available through the Department of Public Safety are for event staff and also for Courtesy And Safety Escort (C.A.S.E.), these are students who can be seen driving the golf-carts around campus. Both positions start at minimum wage, but have the possibility to be promoted to the position of a Public Safety officer.
Other jobs can be found on Whiteboard, which can be accessed through Pipeline. Director of Career Services, Butch Gardner has compiled a list of available positions for students to access through the Bison Career Search tool.
“The applications process begins with the career center, we have applications online that will apply and work for every office with a couple of exceptions,” Gardner said. “Once you create an account on Bison Career Search, you do a job search and there’s a drop down menu that says student jobs. This will list all of the open jobs, you will not be able to see the jobs that have been filled or have not been posted yet.”
The link for the website is, http://www.harding.edu/career/jobsearch, and Gardner said that most jobs do not require a resume, but if they do BCS does have the capability to upload and distribute resumes where needed.
