Harding University’s ultimate frisbee team, Harding Apocalypse, took second place in the Itchfest Ultimate Frisbee Tournament this weekend in Nashville, Tenn., hosted by Vanderbilt University.
The Harding Apocalypse went undefeated all weekend up until the championship game. The most they were scored on before the championship game was only 7 points. They lost to Vanderbilt Relics in the final game 9 to 15.
“We started as the third seeded team,” team member Tyler Conn said. “We were determined to change that. We lost to a club team, so I say we took first.”
Some of the big name schools that competed in the tournament were Clemson, Vanderbilt, Miami, Georgia Tech and Auburn.
“Georgia Tech was the second seeded team and we knew we had a good chance of beating them,” team member Taren Goins said. “When we beat them 11 to 5 it was exciting because we had a chance to get first place.”
If they defeated Vanderbilt Relics, it would been a historical moment for the team.
“It would have been the first time in Apocalypse history to get first place at a tournament,” Goins said.
This weekend Harding will be hosting a tournament here and hopes to be able to take first at the tournament. Teams from all around the south will be coming here to battle in the tournament.
“One good team that might be coming is Alabama,” Goins said. “We’ve played them before and lost.”
This will bring the Harding Apocalypse one step closer to making it to The Regional Tournament, where the top teams in the South compete. The Harding Apocalypse will be practicing hard to prepare them selves for the journey to The Regional Tournament. It is the teams dream to make it to the National Tournament. The Regional Tournament is not until April, so Harding Apocalypse has plenty of time to get ready.
