Alumnus Mat Faulkner is wrapping up his first year as Searcy mayor. Recently, Searcy completed a master plan with various additions to the city in hopes that the plans create a greater community bond. In a discussion with editor-in-chief Tiane Davis, Faulkner shared his hopes for Searcy’s future.
Q: What do you see as distinctive about Searcy?
A: There are so many things that distinguish Searcy, but one that really stands out to me is the community collaboration. A big part of our success is due to the concerted efforts of our residents. Numerous volunteers have stepped forward over the years, actively shaping a wonderful living environment through their dedication and contributions. Their collective spirit has truly made Searcy a great place to live.
Q: What is one thing you wish people knew about the city?
A: I wish more people could see how many opportunities there are in Searcy. From engaging community events to a wide array of job opportunities, there is really something for everyone in Searcy.
Q: As Searcy mayor, what are some new developments that you are most looking forward to in the coming year?
A: The community has spent the past year and a half working on a long-term plan for our parks, active transportation and infrastructure. The plan was just presented to the community last week, and now we have the task of working to implement all of the things that community members envision for Searcy. I’m excited to see how we can all come together as a community to see this plan into a reality.
Q: How important would you say it is to involve the community in decision-making?
A: Involving the community in decision-making is paramount. Our residents are the heartbeat of Searcy, and their insights, ideas and concerns are invaluable. Collaborative decision-making ensures that policies and initiatives reflect the genuine needs and aspirations of our citizens, fostering a sense of ownership and pride in our shared progress.
Q: As a Harding graduate, what advice would you give to Harding students while they live in Searcy, whether it is long or short-term?
A: I would encourage Harding students to engage with the local community, explore our cultural events and shop our businesses. Your time here is an opportunity to not just receive an education but to become an integral part of our city’s story. Your contributions, big or small, can make a lasting impact. And maybe one day you’ll want to make Searcy your long-term home!
Q: What are your hopes for Searcy’s future, especially with the recent long-term master plan in mind?
A: My hopes for Searcy’s future are centered around sustainable growth, enhanced quality of life and strengthened community bonds. With the long-term master plan as our guide, I envision a Searcy that is not only economically prosperous but also socially inclusive. I hope for a city where every citizen feels pride in our shared achievements, and where future generations can thrive in a vibrant, forward-thinking community.
