Summer is the best season for music festivals. Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, The Governors Ball, Summerfest and Movement Electronic Music Festival are a few to name, but there will be over 15 music festivals this summer.
The music festivals happening this year will be hosting huge celebrities, such as Eminem, J. Cole, Travis Scott, Kendrick Lamar, the Killers and Bruno Mars. According to the website Eventbrite, the attendance of millennials has doubled in the past years and 29 percent of millennials have attended a music festival in the past 12 months.
New Eventbrite research shows that there are three reasons for the increase in millennials attending music festivals. One of the reported reasons for the increase of millennial attendance is due to the need for escape. Millennials are also more likely to attend a show or festival that features artists they believe are affecting positive change and they simply want to engage with a like-minded community.
Senior Madison Edwards loves music festivals in the summer. Edwards attended the Governors Ball, a music festival held in New York City, with a group of friends this past summer. The Governors Ball hosts a variety of genres such as rap, pop, R&B, rock, etc.
“It was so fun. I love music festivals and you get a lot of bang for your buck,” Edwards said. “It was hot and the food was amazing but expensive.”
Edwards said her favorite part of a music festival is being able to go to concerts with her favorite people, seeing different artists, and getting as close as she wants to the stage. Edwards would definitely go again in the future.
Senior Brenna Castleberry enjoys music festivals as well. Castleberry has attended Bonnaroo music and arts festival, based in Tennessee, for the past three years and will be attending again in June.
“My favorite part is everyone coming together away from their normal environment and jobs,” Castleberry said. “People form a community and positive atmosphere. They are generally very kind, willing to help and just there to have a good time.”
Summer music festivals are a great way to get millennials up and out of their homes, get off their devices and have a great time enjoying the music and food festivals have to offer.
