Spring is the best season in sports for many reasons. The NBA Playoffs are starting to form, March Madness is in full swing and Major League Baseball kicks off at the beginning of April. But there is one sporting event that stands out above the rest, and it just happens to be the best weekend in all of sports: The Masters.
The Masters is the first of four major tournaments of the professional golf season, and it is the only major that takes place at the same course every year, Augusta National in Augusta, Georgia. Its lush, Bermuda-grass fairways and blooming azaleas are only a couple of the things that make this course and this tournament something special.
The Masters is a tournament full of tradition. There is the Champions Dinner every Tuesday night before the tournament begins, the Par 3 tournament on Wednesday, the players skipping the ball across the water on hole 16 during their practice round and the infamous jacket ceremony after the tournament concludes on Sunday afternoon. This weekend has traditions that are unmatched by other sporting events.
The competitiveness of the players and the toughness of the course itself are what make this tournament so great. Winning the Masters is something that every young golfer dreams of. Augusta National poses difficulties from tee to green, but it is the greens that give players the most problems. While you can’t tell by watching on television, the changes in elevation make the course extremely challenging, especially when the players are trying to make putts. The difficulties give the tournament character, and make it very competitive from Thursday until Sunday, when a champion is finally crowned.
The Masters is the best weekend in all of sports, and nobody will be able to convince me otherwise. Nothing else in sports can compete with the plethora of traditions that this tournament upholds. The competitiveness and drive the players have to find to become a part of the great fraternity of Masters champions is what makes people want to be a part of this incredible weekend year after year. And that is why the Masters is the best weekend in all of sports.
