Lack of interest, enthusiasm, or concern. Sound like anyone you know? Your roommate, best friend, maybe yourself?
With only four weeks left in the semester, it can be hard to muster up the energy to go to class and leave your bed behind. I personally struggle with this when it rains, when it is chilly or when it is beautiful outside. Apathy is currently making all my decisions for me.
If this describes your life, then do not worry there are ways to come back with freshmen- level energy – this includes ditching the sweatpants, hats and dirty hair for clean clothes and showers. I know, it is hard to picture that time in your life.
Step one: remember that collection of paper with days and months neatly bound together gathering dust at the bottom of your backpack? Yeah, now is the time to break out the planner. You might be saying “my planner? How will this re-energize me?” Great question. Use your planner to schedule time for friends. Scheduling time to study or work on projects is vital to maintaining good grades, but if you do not make time to relax and be with friends you will have a breakdown, whether it be emotional or mental.
Step two: naps. You might be thinking to yourself “Sweet. This is the step for me. My whole day is one giant nap.” Sorry, you might not like the direction I am going with this. Learn how to manage your naps. I know – what could be wrong with a harmless nap? Aim for 30 minutes to an hour and half so you do not miss out on interesting opportunities by oversleeping, and so you can try for the elusive, yet magical, eight hours of sleep a night.
Step three: interesting opportunities. Do something outside of your comfort zone. Go to the gym or meet new people. Work off the naps and Netflix marathons for that perfect summer bod. Does this sound uninteresting or unnecessary because you will be wearing a one-piece as a youth intern? That is apathy at work. Get rid of your lethargy with endorphins and new friends.
Try to enjoy each day you have at Harding. Soon you will be graduating, leaving your club, best friends, free time and summer breaks behind. Do not let your college experience slip by in a haze of apathy. Grab life by the Bison horns.
