Spring Sing came to a close last Saturday, April 4, when the winner of the John H. Ryan sweepstakes award was presented with the trophy and check.
TNT, Zeta Rho, and friends’ performance of “Charlie and the Chocolate Tragedy” was enough to win over the audience and the judges. The group was also rewarded a $2,000 check to the charity of their choice, Jacob’s Place.
Charlie and the Chocolate Tragedy chronicled the events of Oompa Loompas working in a chocolate factory that was passed down from Willy Wonka to Charlie. Through a number of various original covers and video effects, the Oompa Loompas manage to defeat Charlie and get Willy Wonka back.
Freshman Billy Sullivan had the experience everyone in Spring Sing hopes for their first time to perform, to be apart of the winning show.
“To win Spring Sing was surreal,” Sullivan said. “It was so rewarding to know that all of our hard work paid off. As a freshman, I could not have asked for a better first show. I have grown up watching Spring Sing so it was so awesome to finally be up on that stage.”
One of the directors for the show, junior Abbie Stumne, said she got to experience the excitement of “getting the trophy back” for TNT and Zeta Rho. As one of the directors, she was largely involved in the production of the show.
“Being a director for a show as large as ours was definitely a challenge,” Stumne said. “I enjoyed every second of it, but I had to remind myself to be patient. I had the opportunity to get to know a lot of the freshmen in TNT and Zeta Rho on a personal level. I am so thankful for this opportunity.”
Jenna Tomberlin, Harding Alumni and former member of Zeta Rho, was pleasantly surprised by the show.
“It was really great to come back and see my old club take home the trophy,” Tomberlin said. “Their show was hilarious. Anytime you can get a group of college kids to paint themselves orange and wear green wigs, you know you have something good on your hands.”
