The Harding Spectacular is an event to showcase the different skills of students hosted by the Campus Activities Board (CAB) on Saturday, March 31 in the Heritage Auditorium.
In order to be a part of the Spectacular, students must audition at any open mic night in the month of February. Open Mic Nights are at Starbucks every Tuesday at 9 p.m. Open Mic is a platform for students to demonstrate their skills without any pressure or incentive.
The Spectacular will feature interactive games along with a variety of acts. The show is open to all types of talent.
“Open Mic Night is for more than just singing or musicians,” senior CAB student director Summer Gibson said. “There have been people who have done magic tricks, poetry, or spoken word.”
The Spectacular is new this year and CAB is using it as a way to give students more of an opportunity to show their talents. The Spectacular has been announced in chapel and flyers have been put up around campus in an effort to get more students involved according to junior CAB employee Austin McCoy.
“Acts will be judged by the CAB workers and we will choose from the Open Mic Nights which is going to be considered an audition, and then from those performances we will choose our top eight-10 acts,” Gibson said. “Then those selected will perform in the Spectacular.”
There are also students who have been involved with Open Mic Night for a while and CAB wants to give them an opportunity to show their talents on a bigger scale. Sophomore Heath Bennett said he has done Open Mic Night six or seven times and performed Feb. 3 with a new band called The Story Collectors.
“At Harding there are so many talented people, it is incredible,” Bennett said. “I think the more people do things like Open Mic and the Spectacular the better. I think we should encourage people to show off those talents as much as possible because people can hide it.”
There are still two more Tuesdays left in the month of February for students to audition. For more information or to sign up to perform, visit the CAB office.
