Three weeks into October and it feels like fall (or “autumn” if you prefer) is finally into full swing. There is just something about fall that makes life seem more enjoyable, even if it only lasts a few months.
First of all, fall is hands down the greatest time for any legitimate sports fan. Baseball is wrapping up, but just starting the post-season and all of the drama that ensues. The beginning of college and professional football is the highlight of most male students’ year. Soccer and volleyball are also happening, and basketball fans get their fix with Midnight Madness festivities.
In case you haven’t noticed, fall weather can be rather unpredictable here in Arkansas. But sudden climate change aside, fall weather in the South is hard to beat. After an unmercifully hot summer, any day the thermometer reads below 80 degrees is cause for celebration. When mid-to-late October rolls around things get down-right chilly, and most people aren’t complaining.
Similar to the weather, the scenery that goes along with the change in temperature is one of the best parts of fall. I won’t go into too much detail about the beauty of the colors and such for fear of my masculinity being brought into question, but you know what I mean; the colors are good.
The holiday season is sort of a transitional time between fall and winter, but for the most part people associate Thanksgiving with the fall, which is another reason why it is so great. Thanksgiving embodies everything a holiday should be about: food, family, football and thankfulness. Halloween is in the fall as well, but that’s like three people over the age of 10’s favorite holiday so it only gets one slightly demeaning sentence.
The only downside of the fall is that it seems to be during the most difficult stretch of schoolwork college students encounter. However, less heat means less people getting angry for no reason, which probably helps keep stress levels down. Any way you swing it, fall is by far my favorite time of year, and I hope even if you don’t feel the same, you enjoy it just as much.
