Although pink is generally associated with the blossoming months of spring, it is back to highlight October as the color of Breast Cancer Awareness month. Pink ribbons have been put up all over the nation, the slogan “Think Pink” can be seen far and wide and even the National Football League has put aside their masculinity and taken up pink cleats, wristbands and gloves. Harding University is joining the fight to cure cancer with help from the football and volleyball teams.
The volleyball team once again had “Play for the Cure” last weekend, but their attempts to raise money for breast cancer were not limited to the Rhodes Fieldhouse and a couple of volleyball games.
“We sold T-shirts, treats, bracelets and mints in the student center,” sophomore Liv Savage said.
The volleyball team dedicated efforts to raise money for cancer to survivor Meagan Burkhead, a senior who was recently declared caner-free. For Savage, “Play for the Cure” wasn’t really very much about volleyball either, it was about something more.
“It’s for Meagan,” Savage said. “It has nothing to do with us, we’re just the people who are helping her and her family and it’s just an honor to do this for her. It’s really inspiring to do things for a good cause that is very needed.”
The Harding University Bison football team will also accent their regular black and gold uniforms with pink wristbands and tape for the month of October. Though it may be a humorous sight to see our hard-hitting Bisons wearing such a feminine color, it’s something that the players always look forward to doing.
“Coach Huckeba allowed us to show our support by wearing as much pink as we had,” said Bison quarterback Kelvin Martin. “Lots of players wore pink tape while others wore pink wristbands and socks.”
You don’t have to be a Harding University athlete to help in the fight either. In addition to the various fundraisers that Harding does throughout the month, donations can be made year-round various breast cancer charities such as Susan G. Komen Foundation of Arkansas and the American Cancer Society.
