From communicating with people all over the world for free to checking in at local businesses, it is no secret that we college students use apps for just about everything. We look for the apps that will make life easier, entertain us and keep us up to date.
Since we are always on the go and often stressed with assignments and activities outside of school, it is pertinent that we choose the apps that will best fit our needs.
In order to make our lives more efficient, I have constructed a list of the top 10 iPhone apps I believe every college student should have. From homework help to finding a good place to eat, they are sure to help students get through the day.
1. myHomework
This app helps the overloaded student stay organized by creating a calendar of assignments. The assignments can be tracked by their due date and are given a color — red, orange or blue — based on their priority. Once an assignment is entered in, notifications are sent to remind you of its due date and importance. For the student taking 18 hours, working a part-time job and participating in club activities, this app is a necessity to stay on top of everything.
2. WebMD
Being away from our parents does have its downfalls, especially when sickness hits. Luckily, we can look to the medical app, WebMD. Not only can you input your symptoms and receive a diagnosis, you can find listings for local health facilities and pharmacies in the area. A first-aid guide is also available giving simple instructions on how to deal with emergencies. While we hope we you will not need this app, the minute you do, you will be glad you downloaded it.
3. Pandora Radio
We all know we need music to get us through those long hours of studying, and what better way to get it than through Pandora, a free music streaming service? You simply select a station or create a personalized music genre and listen away.
4. Mental Case
In today’s society, studying no longer means sitting behind a desk while reading from a book. We live in a mobile world, and that is why Mental Case, a flashcard app, allows students to study whenever and wherever. Users can create endless sets of flashcards with text, photo or audio, and they have the ability to download existing flashcard sets from an online database. There are no more excuses for not studying because you can take the work along with you.
5. Facebook, Twitter, Skype, etc.
Due to their similarities in function, we are just going to group social media into one category. We all have them and most likely do not know how to function without them. There is no need to explain their purpose, other than that they are almost a necessity to get through each and every day of school and social life.
6. Urbanspoon
You know those days when the cafeteria just is not cutting it or when the student center is out of chicken nuggets? Those are the days you lean on Urbanspoon, an app dedicated to finding food options. The program allows you to search or browse by neighborhood, cuisine or price and it also provides critic reviews for each restaurant. One of the best features of Urbanspoon is the “slot machine,” which lets you shake your phone for a random dining recommendation.
7. Dropbox
Tired of having your files all over the place? This app is the perfect fix for that problem. Dropbox lets you take all of your photos, documents and videos anywhere. After you install Dropbox on your computer, any file you save to your Dropbox will save automatically to your iPhone, computer and even the Dropbox website. Even if you lose your phone, your files are always safe in Dropbox.
8. GasBag
With the gas prices soaring, every driver should have this app. GasBag provides the fastest way to find the cheapest gas near you, showing the prices and their location. It also allows you to search for the type of gas you need, and it includes a gas purchase logbook and mileage tracker.
9. EZ Read++
For a little extra homework help, EZ Read brings the entire collection of SparkNotes.com to the iPhone. EZ Read is specifically designed to make the content on the SparkNotes.com website easy to read. The app allows you to check out things like summary and analysis and even quizzes used in studying. While teachers may not approve of EZ Read, your social life will.
10. Mint.com Personal Finance
With college comes responsibilities and with responsibilities comes finances. The Mint.com iPhone app allows users to keep an eye on their spending while on the go. You can enter and follow a budget, see your current cash flow and monitor your current accounts. I don’t see how any college student can do without this app for personal finance.
