The Lady Bison golf team has finished its fall season and is now preparing for the upcoming spring season. Looking back on the fall season, the Lady Bisons did well, placing sixth in their first tournament at the NSU Classic, first in the Harding Fall Classic and fourth in its final tournament, the Lady Red Wolf Classic.Their overall record for the fall was 23-30. But they are not finished yet; they still have the spring season to look forward to and can use the time in between to enhance their skills.”I think one thing we did well this fall was to set our hopes high, and then we worked really hard to reach the goal,” junior Evelyn Poteet said. “The fall is usually a ‘warm up season’ for the spring season when we play the conference tournament. I think we are all looking forward to practicing hard this winter and playing the best we can come spring.”Head coach Nicky Boyd said this year’s team had improved from previous years.”Golf is a sport you can keep getting better and better at for years. No matter what age, it is a sport of a lifetime and takes a special breed of people to play it, partially because you have to call your own fouls,” Boyd said. “This season went well and laid the groundwork for the spring.”Boyd said that the NCAA limits the fall golf season to only four tournaments, but there should be five to six tournaments in the spring, depending on when the weather gets warm. “Overall, we have a team of hard-hitters, which is our single greatest strength,” Boyd said. “One thing we do need to work on, however, is our short game.”Boyd also said the team is a tight-knit group of girls who have a passion for golf and push each other to work harder.”I love this sport. It is a talent that God has given me, and I just love being outside playing the sport, and so does the rest of the team,” said Poteet. “We just look forward to being able to practice together. We have friendly competitions among ourselves at practice, which pushes us to work harder.”The Lady Bisons finished the fall season strong by placing fourth in the Lady Red Wolf Classic in Jonesboro, Ark. Sophomore Whitney Olhausen shot consecutive 78s and placed ninth in the tournament overall. “We placed fourth out of 16 schools,” said Boyd. “And we were the only Division II team in the tournament and every other school was Division I.”For the spring, the Lady Bisons are especially looking forward to the conference tournament in April.”Last year we finished third in the conference tournament,” Boyd said. “And we are a much better team this year. So we are all very excited.”
