As the new president of the Student Association, Steven Ramsey is seeking to start the year off with a bang. With spunk and energy, Ramsey and the officers of the SA are bringing new activities to Harding’s student body, such “Celebrate: Kingdom,” an effort to benefit the Sunshine School.
The 7-week-long project is based off service projects in and around the community, with the goal to reach out to those in need.
“It’s the idea that as students we live in the kingdom of Searcy and we are a part of this community, but we also are part of the kingdom of heaven,” Ramsey said. “As citizens of both of those, we should show kindness and humility where life already happens.”
“Celebrate: Kingdom” will raise money for the Sunshine School, a Searcy organization that teaches and cares for children with special needs. The school is currently transitioning into a new building with modern equipment. Ramsey said any added help from Harding and the Searcy community would greatly benefit the program.
Included in the “Celebrate: Kingdom” project are numerous activities to get the student body involved, such as a drive-in movie outside the Benson Auditorium on Sept. 11.
While Celebrate: Kingdom is a main focus for the Student Association, Ramsey said the SA has additional goals in mind. For Timothy Harless, SA treasurer, a main goal is to boost school spirit with a revamped Rhodes Rowdies group.
“We’re trying to incorporate a few more ideas to pump up school spirit, especially in sporting events,” Harless said. “We’ve got some new things coming up soon for the students to get involved in.”
The SA also plans to bring back last year’s Relay for Life in October, a fundraiser founded by the American Cancer Society that helps local cancer patients during their treatment. An entire day will be dedicated to service projects following the Relay for Life, which will give students more opportunities to help the community.
