For manyHardingstudents,Spring Singdominates the majority of their spring semester. However, with Spring Sing 2010 now complete, many who were involved in the annual show, such as ensemble members, club directors and hosts, are finding out once again what life is like without Spring Sing.
Ironically, club activities were some of the first things that Spring Sing members had to let go if they wanted to be as involved as they were. Sophomore Claire Walker was one of the directors for her club’s show, “The Show Must Go On.” This kept her from participating in Delta Gamma Rho basketball games, which took place at the beginning of the semester. Similarly, junior ensemble member Brandon Ragsdale said he had to miss out on many club activities too.
Junior Seth Bowden had an especially loaded plate when it came to Spring Sing obligations. Not only was he a director for his club, Gamma Sigma Phi, but he was also a member of the ensemble.
“I think it is a lot less time consuming than people may think, but it never felt like a chore because it was so much fun,” Bowden said. “Dottie made sure if we were at practice it was not wasting our time.”
With the first Spring Sing-free weekend approaching, many people have big plans for it. Walker, for instance, is planning to go to Auburn University to visit friends. However, not everyone is “free” on their first Spring Sing-free weekend. Ragsdale and Spring Sing host Sam Barker, along with the rest of the Harding Chorus, will perform a Mahler Symphony with theArkansas Symphony Orchestrain Little Rock on Saturday, April 10.
“My first real free weekend is going to be spent doing nothing because I have not done that in a long time,” Ragsdale said.
Between Walker, Ragsdale, Bowden, Barker and Amber Williams, ensemble member, some of the ways they individually plan to spend their time after Spring Sing include:
- Catching up on sleep.
- Resting my voice.
- Actually being able to hang out in the dorm room.
- Study, study, study.
- Hanging out with friends.
- Just being able to do nothing.
- Start making summer plans.
- Being a newly selected TNT queen.
- Being able to be more involved in club activities and club sports.
- Getting ready forPied Piperstour.
- Catching up on “Lost.”
Even with all of the time spent on Spring Sing, most participants said it was worth it.
“It is just something, from the first time I saw Spring Sing, that I’ve wanted to do,” Barker said. “The people and directors are awesome and I love working with them. It is very rewarding. If someone asked me to do it again this weekend I would do it again in a heartbeat. I am ready to work on it for next year in any way I can, whether tech crew, ensemble or hopefully host again.”
