I have always envisioned medicine as something that comes from Walgreens in an orange bottle. However, lately I have discovered the value of intangible objects in the healing process. The things that cause us pain, just as the things that can heal us, are not always seen. In the same way, the lyrics of a song can bring more comfort than pharmaceuticals — or, in my case, ice cream. The Songs of Love Foundation inspired these thoughts as I explored the organization’s efforts to share music with ill children across the country. Depending solely on charitable donations, the organization produces original songs tailored to fit the personality of each child. More than 20,000 songs have been produced to date, meaning there are nearly 20,000 children who have received the gift of music in their time of struggle. I think that this is a lesson for all of us, proving that the simplicity of a song can bring more joy than the latest action figure or Barbie. Your song, and your words, are forever. |
