A little over a year ago, the war between HD-DVD’s and Blu ray was waging on. Everyone was waiting to see which High Definition movie player would be chosen. Blu ray had the competitive advantage due to them being built into the Playstation 3 consoles.
Now over a year later, Blu ray discs could be becoming obsolete.
How could Blu ray already be obsolete you may ask? It is pretty simple, with today’s digital, fast pace world, easy access and affordability may be the eventual down fall of Blu ray.
Blu ray players, PS3’s and Tivo’s and more are all trying to give the consumer a cheaper and easier way to acquire movies. These consoles are already providing customers the ability to download Netflix and blockbuster movies over the internet. The movies are download to the console for the consumer to watch similar to the Pay per view functions from cable and satellitecompanies.
However if someone does not have an internet connection or these consoles, the newest trend is for people is run to their corner red box (which is becoming more accessible than Starbucks). Red box allows the customer to rent a movie for a dollar a day, which is easily the cheapest of all movie rentals, unfortunately they only carry newly released movies.
Another problem for Blu ray is that many people have also noticed that some Blu ray players are not compatible with there old DVD’s, which includes some peoples home movies they have burned to a DVD from there computer. So why would people want buy Blu ray’s that cost more? The high definition is a plus but I do not think it is a big enough draw for most people.
My true opinion is that in this digital age, in a few years instead of buying an actual movie disc, many people will start buying digital copies of movies via itunes or something similar. If they did this, they could save the movies to an external hard drive that can be plugged into their TV’s, this would save space on a computer and save physical space by not having the DVD cases taking up room in their houses.
I know that High definition movies will be in our future for a long time, I just do not know if we will be getting them from Blu ray discs.
