During the last two seasons, sinceBrett Favrehas worn the Green and Yellow for theGreen Bay Packers, many have discussed how Brett has ruined his legacy as a Packers great. Packers fans have said they will not forgive him for leaving Green Bay and some have even burned Brett Favre memorabilia. However it wasn’t Brett who truly caused this, it was Green Bay general managerTed Thompson.
Thompson practically forced Brett out when he told Brett he would have to compete withAaron Rodgers, the offseason after Favre was one play away from taking Green Bay back to the Super bowl. Favre, who is known for not wanting to participate in training camp, had sat out contemplating retirement again. This put the management in a tough situation, which led the team to ultimately, cut ties with the face of the team for the last 16 seasons. Brett didn’t want to leave but the management did not want him to stay.
So now, two seasons after the nasty breakup, Favre went to a team in the NFL that ran the same type of offense the Green Bay ran during Brett’s career. You can’t blame him for going to a team that ran an offense he has perfected over the years, can you? It just happened to be the Packers hated division rivals theMinnesota Vikings.
I understand as a football fan, that will make anyone hate a player, much less when he beats your team twice in a season. I think what Packers Fans must remember is Brett isn’t playing for revenge against you, he is playing to prove to you that your G.M. made the wrong decision in forcing Brett out. Brett loves the fans that made him what he is today, he just wants to stick it to his former boss, and if you were in the same position, you would probably want to do the same.
When it is all said and done, and the dust clears I think history can tell you how this story will end. Take a look at other greats who tried to prove they had something left in the tank.Emmitt Smith, Dallas Cowboys great went on and played two years for the Arizona Cardinals. That wasn’t something that Cowboys fans wanted to see, but when he finally retired he signed a one-day contract and retired as with the Cowboys.Joe Montanawill always be remembered as a 49ers great, even though he finished up as a Kansas City Chief. Don’t forget, the biggest star in professional sports,Michael Jordanwent to the Washington Wizards to finish his career, but he will be forever remembered as a Chicago Bull. No matter what Brett does in his remaining years, when he retires he will be remembered withVince LombardiandBart Starras a Green Bay Packers legend.
