This week, Harding University’s cafeteria began using washable take out boxes opposed to the traditional white Styrofoam boxes as Harding continues to go green. This after they took the trays out of the cafeteria last year to cut down on the water used to wash dishes.
Many students believe the idea of going green is good. Harding has added many paper, plastic and can recycle containers around the campus. There are noticeably more recycle containers this semester than they had last semester. The big problem voiced by students is the fact that they have to bring the boxes back to the cafeteria.
“It’s a good idea but no one wants to have to rinse it out and carry it all day to return it,” said student Katie Wade.
Some are not sure how long the reusable boxes will last if students do not return them or the boxes themselves are not monitored. “It’s a hassle,” says student Rachel Williams. “I don’t think people will take them back to the caf. They might just throw them away.”
Though it seems that many students have brought back the boxes, there have been some seen left on top of trash cans outside as well as in the student center with the trays. A few have been put into the recycling containers as well.
“The whole point of getting takeout food is to not have to cleanup anything or take care of it, just throw it away when you’re done,” said student Jessica Montgomery.
SA President Bryan Clifton suggested that take-out box drop off sites be used in places like the student center and dorms. Many students agree that having different places around campus to drop off their used take out boxes would help.
