As new students at Harding University are adjusting to the college lifestyle, many of them are focused on their extracurricular activities.
“I really want to join a social club so that I can have a chance to make a lot of new friends,” freshman Jessica Aebi said. “I hear girls talking about how much fun they have with their clubs and I want to be a part of that too.”
This week started the beginning of the social club process at Harding. Various club mixers were held throughout the week so that potential new members could meet and talk with older club members.
“Mixers are basically a time when the new girls come and meet the current members of the club. The current members are looking for girls to join the club, while the new members are deciding which club they want to join,” club member Elena Moore said. “I think mixers are a good idea because it gives you a chance to meet new girls that you wouldn’t otherwise meet.”
Each social club has about four mixers. Every mixer has a unique theme, from slip ‘n slides to princess parties.
“The theme of our mixer was ‘what’s your major’, and all of the girls, new and old, dressed up like their major,” club member Maria Gleim said. “The different outfits are really interesting to see and it helps spark conversations between the girls.”
About 500 students are expected to participate in the club process this year. The process will conclude on Oct. 28, when the new members are invited to a join a club.
