This semester new social clubs Zeta Pi Zeta and Delta Nu will make their debuts in the social club process. Fall is the critical time when clubs search for new members, and the new clubs are finding ways to make their names stand out among the competition.
New door signs and officer names are a few ways Zeta Pi Zeta is trying to distinguish itself from other clubs, Zeta Pi Zeta president Alicia Miller said. Because some of the girls in the club came from Regina and Shantih, they are trying to make their club week different from what they have already experienced.
Delta Nu’s focus will be on finding a diverse pledge class and trying to prevent developing a stereotype, Mary Armstrong said. According to Armstrong, they will also emphasize that sports will be about having fun, not about competing against other clubs.
Both clubs have been working on different service projects in order to help the community. Delta Nu is planning to work with the Humane Society during pledge week, and members have already done work in Searcy schools, Armstrong said, including tutoring students and playing with children after classes.
Zeta Pi Zeta members plan to volunteer for Hope Cottage in the future, and they have worked with men’s social club Kyodai on a few service projects, Miller said.
The two clubs differ on how many new members each one will accept this semester. Zeta Pi Zeta plans to take in almost as many new pledges as there are active members.
“We’re hoping to get as big as Delta Gamma Rho or Ju Go Ju,” Miller said, but she also added that they have no set number of pledges they are going to accept.
Delta Nu, however, plans on taking about 20 new members. Armstrong explains that they want more original members than new members.
“This way the girls who started Delta Nu will have more say in club matters than new pledges, and the club can be what we envisioned it to be,” Armstrong said.
The original members of each club have varying amounts of actual club experience. Delta Nu’s members are spread out between Ju Go Ju, Zeta Rho, Pi Theta Phi, Delta Gamma Rho and Regina, according to Katie Shields. According to Miller, most of Zeta Pi Zeta’s members were not in social clubs before joining.
“That was the only difficult part, teaching how a club works to girls who had never been in a club,” Miller said.
