Nooma is a “mind body” experience studio that seeks to help people connect their bodies to their spirits and their breath, according to Casey Cox, co-founder and co-owner of Nooma. She said the studio’s mission is to reconnect clients with who they are through a variety of exercises in a quality enviroment.
“It’s from the inside that changes the outside versus (the idea that) you change the outside first,” Cox said. “So we don’t focus on (the outside).”
Nicole Hopkins, cofounder and co-owner of Nooma, said she benefits from the relationships she builds with the people she meets at Nooma and through seeing the results in their lives.
“Instead of talking about the weather we’re talking about what’s really going on,” Hopkins said.
Nooma offers classes on mindful meditation to gentle flow to aerial yoga and Pilates in both hot and cool settings. Classes are for all ages and types of people, according to Cox.
“Yoga is for everybody,” Cox said. “If you can breathe, you can do it.”
Junior Justice Laws said his preferred method of exercise is dance, which he has been doing since age 5. Laws said he enjoys dance because it allows him to express his emotions through movement while still benefitting from performing a physical activity.
“Telling a story through movement is beautiful. It’s beautiful to watch and beautiful to do physically,” Laws said. “It’s great exercise and . . . it’s just a great way to build relationships.”
Laws will begin teaching dance and Zumba classes at Nooma beginning March 2. He said he hopes to provide a fun and upbeat environment to teach moves that people can easily take with them to use at home when they exercise. Laws said the first step to working out nontraditionally is taking baby steps by setting small, easily attainable goals.
“Just knowing what fits you and your body and going from there,” Laws said.
