{"id":9904,"date":"2017-11-30T20:16:18","date_gmt":"2017-12-01T02:16:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/?p=9904"},"modified":"2017-11-30T20:16:18","modified_gmt":"2017-12-01T02:16:18","slug":"coping-with-culture-shock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/2017\/11\/30\/coping-with-culture-shock\/","title":{"rendered":"Coping with Culture Shock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cReturning to America was very hard for me, because I had left a place that I felt needed in,\u201d junior Bailey Robertson said. \u201cI felt whole in Zambia, like this is what had been missing my entire life. I was the best version of myself there, and it was hard for me to be ripped away from a place that made me feel whole.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robertson recently returned to the U.S. after studying abroad with Harding In Zambia (HIZ) this fall.\u00a0 She said adapting to the physical change of living was also very hard on Robertson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoing from absolutely no water and electricity for a week, to perfect working faucets and air conditioning was hard to handle,\u201d Robertson said. \u201cI dealt with a lot of guilt for living such a simple life to going back to extravagance and luxury.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To combat guilt, Robertsonsaid she relied on others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI learned that leaning on those who experienced those things with me was the best thing I could do for myself because we are all in a community together,\u201d Robertson said. \u201cI advise lots of alone time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Senior Robert Stewart also faced challenges upon returning from the Harding University Greece Program (HUG) in Fall 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Stewart\u2019s advice is to keep engaged wherever travels lead.
