Recently, Amazon announced that it will be producing a multi-season TV series based on J.R.R Tolkien\u2019s \u201cLord of the Rings\u201d. Amazon secured the rights for the program recently by closing a $250 million deal. The Tolkien fanbase speculated that with the large amount already invested in the program, this may be one of the top spenders for a TV series. Peter Jackson\u2019s \u201cLord of the Rings\u201d movie trilogy had a total budget of about $281 million.<\/p>\n
The director for the series is still unknown, but New Line Cinema is set to produce this series with Amazon. New Line was the main producer of all of Peter Jackson\u2019s \u201cLord of the Rings\u201d films.<\/p>\n
Sharon Tal Yguado, Amazon\u2019s head of scripted series said, \u201cWe are honored to be working with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, Harper Collins and New Line on this exciting collaboration for television and are thrilled to be taking\u00a0The \u2018Lord of the Rings\u2019\u00a0fans on a new epic journey in Middle Earth.\u201d<\/p>\n
The timeline of the series is set before the first book in Tolkien\u2019s Lord of the Rings trilogy, \u201cThe Fellowship of the Ring\u201d, however, the storyline is uncertain. Senior Caleb Russell said that he is excited for a new adaptation to the Tolkien lore.<\/p>\n
\u201cI like that the show stands outside the original timeline,\u201d Russell said. \u201cThis gives the franchise an opportunity to insert new life into a Tolkien-rich world with history and other stories.\u201d<\/p>\n
With the news of a new adaptation to a highly adored lore, some fear that the series will take a different turn and lose some of the Tolkien magic that has been seen in the past movies. According to adjunct communications professor Dennis McCarty says what he sees as potential threats.<\/p>\n
\u201cOne thing that I am worried about is that when it comes to medieval fantasy, \u2018Game of Thrones\u2019 has been the trendsetter,\u201d McCarty said. \u201cBut the thing about \u2018Lord of the Rings\u2019 vs. \u2018Game of Thrones\u2019 is that \u2018Lord of the Rings\u2019 has always been family friendly, and with the freedom that a streaming service like Amazon has, if they were to inject sex into \u2018Lord of the Rings\u2019 it might be the last straw for a lot of the fans.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hopefully \u201cGame of Thrones\u201d does not affect Amazon\u2019s creating of this \u201cLord of the Rings\u201d project. Lord of the Rings is a favorite of many, and it would be a shame to see it take a wrong turn in an attempt to make money.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
