{"id":9794,"date":"2017-11-09T16:40:12","date_gmt":"2017-11-09T22:40:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/?p=9794"},"modified":"2017-11-30T20:07:02","modified_gmt":"2017-12-01T02:07:02","slug":"faculty-and-students-bring-tedx-event-to-campus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/2017\/11\/09\/faculty-and-students-bring-tedx-event-to-campus\/","title":{"rendered":"Faculty and Students Bring TEDx Event to Campus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Harding will host its first independently organized TEDx event on Tuesday, Nov. 14. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The event will feature seven speakers, including B. Chris Simpson, Manna CEO Mark Moore, investigative reporter Jerry Mitchell, Dean of the College of Bible and Ministry, Dr. Monte Cox and senior public relations major Raneisha Stassin. The overall theme is \u201cVison for the Vulnerable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Dean of the Honors College Mike James wanted Harding to host a TED Talk event after assigning a similar project for students in his Honors 205 class. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAt the end of the term, I wanted students to present their ideas in a TED Talk fashion,\u201d James said. \u201cThey were going to be individuals talking for 18 minutes or less. Then it spurred my thinking, why not a TEDxHarding?\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After completing the application process in February and forming a committee in April, the event was planned for November. James then began the process of selecting speakers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe want (the TEDx Talks) to be the Harding community, so we want the speakers to be either Harding students, faculty or alumni, or in the Harding community,\u201d James said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">President of the American Studies Institute senior Brittany Smyser had the opportunity to volunteer with the event organizers, and emphasized her excitement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI believe this will be a great event for Harding. My hope is that it will be eye-opening and that it will encourage students to think outside the box,\u201d Smyser said. \u201cTED Talks are all about novel ideas, and I think this event will inspire attendees to continuously look for opportunities to expand their knowledge and worldview.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">English professor and committee member Dr. Heath Carpenter is excited about what this event is going to bring to Harding. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI personally love (TED Talks), they are such an easily assessable wisdom on a broad scale,\u201d Carpenter said. \u201cThey feature so many different topics from some of the world\u2019s greatest thinkers. I think we do a good job of this, but this is going to be even better for us to be able to have these interesting, out-of-the-box, in-depth public conversations.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Both James and Carpenter are excited about the scheduled speakers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAnytime I\u2019m involved with something, I always ask the question, \u2018Would I want to go to this?\u2019 and I want to go,\u201d Carpenter said. \u201cI want to hear Jerry Mitchell, Mark Moore, Raneisha Stassin. I want to hear what these people have to say.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">According to James, the speakers will represent a number of backgrounds and perspectives. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe wanted equal representation,\u201d James said. \u201cWe wanted male and female, young and old \u2014 we wanted a lot of demographics.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Smyser echoed James\u2019 statements, mentioning that she looks forward to the array of ideas the scheduled speakers will bring to the event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI\u2019m looking forward to the great variety of speakers we will hear,\u201d Smyser said. \u201cI love hearing new perspectives from people with different experiences than me and I know this will be a great opportunity to do just that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">With only 220 tickets available, students had the opportunity to apply for a ticket through Nov. 7, with the final selection announced on Nov. 9.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The event will be held from 6:30-10 p.m. in the Reynolds Recital Hall on Tuesday, Nov. 14.
