Since May 1997, AIM served as a communication platform for teenagers and adults alike. In today\u2019s age of multiple social media platforms, however, AIM has fallen to the wayside in favor of user-friendly messaging platforms. According to businessinsider.com, usage of AIM dropped 73 percent from January 2011 to January 2012. This comes as no surprise to several former users of AIM.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI used to use AIM to chat with my friends about Runescape when I was around 7 or 8 years old,\u201d junior Doster Cohen said. \u201cI didn\u2019t have much experience with it since by the time I was older, Facebook Messenger and other social media had come around, and I honestly can\u2019t believe that AIM is still around. It blows my mind.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Junior Taylor Paden also recalls using AIM when she was younger, primarily to \u201cpester her friends when she saw that they were online.\u201d Paden also attributes AIM\u2019s demise to the rise of different and more effective means of communication. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI think that the reason most people have switched to things like texting to communicate is that texting is a much more reliable way to send messages,\u201d Paden said.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9692\" style=\"width: 334px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9692\" class=\" wp-image-9692\" src=\"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/AIMGrave-Web-256x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"324\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/AIMGrave-Web-256x300.png 256w, https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/AIMGrave-Web-768x899.png 768w, https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/AIMGrave-Web-874x1024.png 874w, https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/AIMGrave-Web-1170x1370.png 1170w, https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/AIMGrave-Web-585x685.png 585w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 324px) 100vw, 324px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-9692\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Graphic by Darrian Bagley<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Joanna Lemmons, administrative assistant to the deans in the Office of Student Life, began using AIM in middle school, but primarily used it in college. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe didn\u2019t get Facebook until my sophomore year of college,\u201d Lemmons said. \u201cWe didn\u2019t have smart phones. You could do video chat, but you had to have a separate webcam and it was a complicated process that usually didn\u2019t have great connectivity \u2026 AIM was the first time you could really be in constant contact with someone without really being with them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Lemmons, who has not used AIM since 2008, credits the messenger with having cultivated her best friend while in college. She said that having a platform of constant communication helped them become such good friends. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">AIM, while an important piece of technology, has been passed up by more effective platforms.
