{"id":9140,"date":"2017-09-14T22:17:51","date_gmt":"2017-09-15T04:17:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/?p=9140"},"modified":"2017-09-14T22:56:52","modified_gmt":"2017-09-15T04:56:52","slug":"searcy-theater-to-show-thorton-wilders-classic-our-town","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/2017\/09\/14\/searcy-theater-to-show-thorton-wilders-classic-our-town\/","title":{"rendered":"Searcy Theater to Show Thorton Wilder&#8217;s Classic &#8216;Our Town&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Searcy Performing Arts Center on the Square is opening its doors for the production \u201cOur Town\u201d tonight at 7:30 p.m. and will have showings every Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. for the next three weeks, with a matinee showing on Sunday Oct. 1 at 1:30 p.m. \u201cOur Town,\u201d based in New Hampshire during the early 1900s, delves into the themes of everyday living, romance and marriage, and death and eternity.<\/p>\n<p>The lead protagonists George Gibbs and Emily Webb fall in love with each other through their family\u2019s close bond. As their relationship progresses from courtship to marriage, the story skips to Webb\u2019s death. Webb finds herself in the spirit realm and is granted one day back in her life. Upon choosing to relive her twelfth birthday, she realizes humanity\u2019s lack of appreciation for life. The concept of the story puts the viewer in reflection as it rhetorically asks the question, \u201cHow are you spending your time while you\u2019re alive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Searcy\u2019s rendition of \u201cOur Town\u201d will be hosted by Center on the Square, a nonprofit organization which aims to show the community an appreciation for performing arts and invites people to enjoy theater. It also features a youth program, KidStage, which gives kids a look into performance and helps hone their skills within theater.<\/p>\n<p>Center on the Square has put on over 150 shows since 1999, according to the \u201cOur Town\u201d director Carla Fuller.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur Town\u201d features Harding students and alumni, senior Matt Garner and alumni Janet Garner and Chad Kraft.<\/p>\n<p>According to Fuller, Center on the Square regularly has interest from the Harding community, and students usually come to auditions for every play.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe love for [Harding students] to get involved for several reasons: they\u2019re often talented, they\u2019re fun\u2026 and they know a lot of people on campus.\u201d Fuller said. \u201cWe usually have some students show up for all of our auditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Junior Mills Bryant has been in two productions on Center on the Square, \u201cGrease\u201d and \u201cMy Three Angels,\u201d and has enjoyed both productions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it has exposed me to a whole different group, and it\u2019s been great,\u201d Bryant said.<\/p>\n<p>Center on the Square was founded was to the further the arts in Searcy and the surrounding community, according to Fuller.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt seems that the community really enjoys our shows. They especially love seeing people they know on stage,\u201d Fuller said.<\/p>\n<p>After \u201cOur Town\u201d has closed its curtains, KidStage will have a performance in Nov. 2-4, and \u201cA Christmas Carol\u201d will be playing Dec. 1-17.
