{"id":4724,"date":"2014-04-14T02:17:01","date_gmt":"2017-02-22T15:21:58","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-30T06:00:00","slug":"%e2%80%8bdeadly-fires-in-chile-affect-area-close-to-hula","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/2014\/04\/14\/%e2%80%8bdeadly-fires-in-chile-affect-area-close-to-hula\/","title":{"rendered":"\u200bDeadly fires in Chile affect area close to HULA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"s5\">An enormousfire has been burning in Valparaiso, Chile, an adjoining city toHarding University in Latin America&#8217;shome inVinadel Mar, but the HULA group remains safe, according to HULA director Tom Hook.<\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\">\u200bThe fire has been burning since about 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon,Hook said, and has been reignited in several areas by gusty winds this afternoon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\">\u200bOn Saturday night, authorities declared Valparaiso a catastrophiczone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\">\u200bAndreaDeCamp, a junior currently at HULA, said surrounding areas have been evacuated,but &#8220;HULA is safe.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\">\u200b&#8221;(The fire)is not \u2026any kind of real danger to HULA as it is several miles from our rather protected location, though visible from our apartment complex on Cerro Castillo,&#8221; Hook said. &#8220;We are taking precautions not to go into the areas impacted by the fire nor by the traffic congestion caused by it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\">\u200bThe Associated Press reported on Sunday that the fires have killed at least 11 people, destroyed at least 1,000 homes and more than 10,000 people were evacuated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\">\u200b&#8221;It&#8217;s a tremendous tragedy. This could be the worst fire in the city&#8217;s history,&#8221;President MichelleBachelettold the AP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\">\u200bValparaiso is in the same bay asVinadel Mar and is in the town over, according toDeCamp.
