More than 60 students, staff and faculty members camped in the Ganus Athletic Center Friday night in an effort to raise money and awareness for the Student Association’sTents and Tarps<\/a>relief effort for Haiti.Students participating in Friday’s “InTents” event raised about $2,000 for Tents and Tarps through perosnal donation pages, a $1,000 corporate sponsorship from First Security bank and a benefit concert.The SA began the Tents and Tarps a relief effort several weeks ago to provide immediate shelter to Haitians left homeless after a magnitude 7.0 earthquake devastaed the country a month ago.Watch the video at the bottom of the story to seeStephen Goodale’s<\/a>report on “InTents.”<\/strong>The SA has helped raise more than $300,000 for the effort to date, sent 200 tents to Haiti and currently has 500 more in transit.”I have been absolutely overwhelmed by the response of the student body,” said Sarah Kyle, a student organizer. “When there is a need, they rise to the occasion. Seeing all the students at ‘InTents’ was just further proof of this. It was just a true blessing to have a night to come together for the people of Haiti, and I felt truly honored to be a part of this.”The students who camped out in the GAC Friday participated in a devo and prayer time for Haiti, played games, watched movies \u2014 and a few even managed to sleep for a couple hours. Aramark donated a hot breakfast at 6 a.m.<\/p>\n

“I am continually amazed at the Harding Student Body’s willingness to get involved with causes such as Tents and Tarps,” said Sky Vanderburg, one of the student organizers. “From prayer for Haiti to building community among motivated students, I believe that the ‘InTents Night’ was a memorable experience for all involved.”<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
