The Harding Career Center organized a career expo Thursday, Oct. 8, in the McInteer rotunda that allowed students to talk with businesses about job opportunities.<\/p>\n
Deb Bashaw, the Career Center director, encouraged all students, including freshmen, to come to the event.<\/p>\n
“Students get to see what is out there,” Bashaw said. “They have the opportunity to talk with businesses that they might normally not think of.”<\/p>\n
A range of businesses had displays including Sherwin Williams, the US Army, Data-Tronics, and Enterprise Rent-A-Car. Students were able to talk directly to company employees and ask questions. Representatives distributed informational pamphlets to students about their businesses.<\/p>\n
“It’s just good to talk to people who are already working,” said Brittany Mountford, sophomore psychology major. “It helps give you perspective about jobs.”<\/p>\n
The Career Center says in its mission is “to assist students in achieving their personal and career goals.” To fulfill that goal, the center offers several events each semester to give students information about the next phase of their lives. In September, they had a graduate school fair. Next March, they plan on having another career expo.<\/p>\n
“Networking, networking, networking,” said Bashaw about the goals of the expo. “We want to give students another resource.”<\/p>\n
The center helps students in all stages prepare for their careers. Students can go to the center to research different careers and take the Myers-Briggs to help them decide their major. Later, students can learn how to write a resume, about job searching, and interviewing skills.<\/p>\n
The Career Center is located on the second floor of the student center in room 239. It is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.<\/p>\n
