{"id":3006,"date":"2013-04-18T21:05:10","date_gmt":"2017-02-22T15:21:53","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-30T06:00:00","slug":"outdoor-recreation-leadership-minor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/2013\/04\/18\/outdoor-recreation-leadership-minor\/","title":{"rendered":"Outdoor recreation leadership minor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Harding University&#8217;s kinesiology department announced a new minor in outdoor recreation leadership will be available for enrollment in the fall of 2013.<\/p>\n<p>The new minor in outdoor recreation leadership will have an 18-hour course requirement and will specifically focus on leading outdoor expeditions in a variety of outdoor settings and would ideally be paired with majors in youth &amp; family ministry, behavioral science, kinesiology or sports and recreation management. <\/p>\n<p>J.D. Yingling, an associate professor of kinesiology and director of the aquatics program, worked on the development of the new minor for a year and a half.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am excited about the opportunities this minor will provide Harding University students in outdoor activities and challenge course facilitation,&#8221; Yingling said. &#8220;I believe it has the potential to offer a lot more opportunities for outdoor recreation to all students who have interest in pursuing further outdoor course instruction.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The outdoor recreation leadership minor will include study in the following areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Challenge Course Facilitation 3 hours<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This course will equip students with the technical aspects of supervising a challenge course and the skills associated with teaching life lessons from participation in various challenge course activities.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Outdoor Living Skills 3 hours<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This course would teach outdoor adventure skills necessary for backpacking, camping, survival, wilderness first aid, leave no trace, navigation, etc. This course would include a camping excursion to help apply these skills.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>KINS 214 Lifeguarding (includes first aid, CPR &amp; AED certification) 1 hour<\/li>\n<li>REC 320 Organization &amp; Supervision of Recreation Programs 3 hours<\/li>\n<li>REC 325 Recreational Sports &amp; Activities 3 hours<\/li>\n<li>Outdoor Activity Classes:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Five hours from the following KINS 133\/134\/135 classes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>KINS 133 Backpacking and Orienteering      1 hour<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>              Spelunking                  1 hour<\/p>\n<p>              Winter Sports                1 hour<\/p>\n<p>              Water Sports                 1 hour<\/p>\n<p>              Canoeing\/Kayaking             1 hour<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>KINS 134 Scuba                     1 hour<\/li>\n<li>KINS 135 Rock Climbing                1 hour<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other KINS 133 courses could count with permission from chairman (1\/2 marathon training, disc activities, etc.)<\/p>\n<p>Visit the GAC 100 if you have questions or want more information.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Harding University&#8217;s kinesiology department announced a new minor in outdoor recreation leadership will be available for enrollment in the fall of 2013.
