{"id":18447,"date":"2023-04-28T15:43:14","date_gmt":"2023-04-28T21:43:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/?p=18447"},"modified":"2023-04-28T15:43:15","modified_gmt":"2023-04-28T21:43:15","slug":"womens-soccer-host-indoor-tournament","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/2023\/04\/28\/womens-soccer-host-indoor-tournament\/","title":{"rendered":"Women&#8217;s soccer host indoor tournament"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Written by Nic Fraraccio <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Harding women\u2019s soccer team hosted an indoor soccer tournament Saturday, April 22, to raise money for a local charity.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eleven teams participated in the tournament which included pool play and playoff rounds. The winner of the tournament received the option to choose which charity receives the total money raised. V\u00e1rzea Futebol Clube (FC) defeated The Old Guys in penalty kicks to win the championship game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>V\u00e1rzea FC only lost one game in the group stage before winning three straight to win the championship. Team Cookout defeated V\u00e1rzea FC 3-1 in the first group stage match for Group B.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A variety of teams participated in the tournament held at the Hatcher Indoor Complex. Three high school teams were represented in the tournament. The Harding men\u2019s track and tennis teams were represented on two different teams.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>V\u00e1rzea FC consisted of Harding soccer alumni and former members from other college soccer teams. Team Cookout and The Old Guys gathered members from the Harding men\u2019s soccer team to participate in the tournament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Junior Tyler Sterbenz, a member of Team Cookout, said he enjoyed the event and hopes the event will be continued in the future.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the first time they\u2019ve ever done something like that in the time I\u2019ve been here,\u201d Sterbenz said. \u201cI thought it was good to see outside soccer players get together and kick the ball around. It\u2019s a good way to raise money for charity and just have fun with the sport because I know in America it\u2019s not really a highly sought-after sport.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Freshmen Talia Walsh and Whitney Thomas, two members of the Harding women\u2019s soccer team, were in attendance to help coordinate the event on Saturday. Walsh said the tournament ran smoothly, and she was happy to meet players from multiple teams throughout the day.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI definitely got closer to a lot more people at this event,\u201d Walsh said. \u201cI think it\u2019s a good way of getting our school together because sports are so grouped off.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thomas said she would love to see more people at the event next year because it is a fun way to try something new.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a good way to interact with different sports and the Harding community,\u201d Thomas said. \u201cIt\u2019s just a chance to have fun and do something that maybe you wouldn\u2019t usually do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>V\u00e1rzea FC has not confirmed which charity will receive the winnings from the tournament.
