{"id":18294,"date":"2023-04-06T16:36:06","date_gmt":"2023-04-06T22:36:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/?p=18294"},"modified":"2023-04-06T16:36:07","modified_gmt":"2023-04-06T22:36:07","slug":"students-choreograph-host-hostess-and-ensemble-direct-shows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/2023\/04\/06\/students-choreograph-host-hostess-and-ensemble-direct-shows\/","title":{"rendered":"Students choreograph host, hostess and ensemble, direct shows"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Written by Morgan Wrigley \/\/ Photo by Balazs Balassa <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two students took on a challenge this Spring Sing season as they collaborated both with others to lead their club shows and with each other to help choreograph the hosts, hostesses and ensemble numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sophomore Emma McDaris is a director for \u201cLiving Color,\u201d featuring women\u2019s social clubs Delta Gamma Rho and Phi Kappa Delta and men\u2019s social club Omega Phi. Junior Violet Brentham is a director for \u201cSteeling the Show\u201d featuring men\u2019s clubs Gamma Sigma Phi and Theta and women\u2019s social club Pi Theta Phi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both also worked with Dottie Frye, Spring Sing director and assistant professor of theatre, to choreograph the ensemble numbers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe would meet every Monday afternoon, and we work in [my office], talking about flavor and style and costumes,\u201d Frye said. \u201c&#8230; And then we go across the hall in the rehearsal hall, and we work for another couple of hours.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frye said Brentham and McDaris had different strengths that complemented each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen the two got together, it was very fun to watch them find out their similarities and their differences and their strengths,\u201d Frye said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brentham said the two had different dance backgrounds that brought a variety of ideas to the table.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI love working with Emma,\u201d Brentham said. \u201cBoth of us have very different styles of dance, and we come from very different dance backgrounds, but whenever we come together, we both bring such different ideas to the table, and so it&#8217;s been really cool to see how our styles come together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brentham and McDaris both said while their schedules were hectic, the best part was having the opportunity to collaborate with many different people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPerforming and creating something is a totally different process,\u201d McDaris said,&nbsp; \u201cI think the most challenging and learning and rewarding part is finding out how you can collaborate with people in many different ways.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brentham said the people she was working with made it easier to transition between the two groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTime management for sure has been hard,\u201d Brentham said. \u201cBut I have a really good support system that I&#8217;ve been working with, and it made it very easy to transition back and forth between different rehearsals.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McDaris said one of the main parts of transitioning from ensemble rehearsals to club rehearsals was a change of mindset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEnsemble is definitely a more professional mindset,\u201d McDaris said. \u201cI know that this group has auditioned, and they normally will have experience. And we&#8217;ve kind of already established that these will be practices where we just \u2018learn, learn, learn,\u2019 \u2018go, go, go.\u2019 Transitioning to the club show is taking into account just the fun of it \u2026 and the community in it \u2026 and knowing that some people might not be dancers, but they love to perform and love Spring Sing.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McDaris is also a member of the Spring Sing ensemble, while Brentham is performing in her club show.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is very rewarding, getting to see and feel when my fellow classmates nail it and getting to know that I made things that I knew would accentuate my friends,\u201d McDaris said. \u201cIt is very rewarding to get to feel that with the cast.
