{"id":17858,"date":"2023-03-23T21:44:49","date_gmt":"2023-03-24T03:44:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/?p=17858"},"modified":"2023-03-24T10:13:29","modified_gmt":"2023-03-24T16:13:29","slug":"harding-hosts-first-outdoor-meet-at-new-track-facility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/2023\/03\/23\/harding-hosts-first-outdoor-meet-at-new-track-facility\/","title":{"rendered":"Harding competes in first outdoor meet at new track facility"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Written by Morgan Wrigley \/\/ Photo by Macy Cox<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The men\u2019s and women\u2019s track and field teams participated in their first outdoor meet at the University\u2019s new track facility last weekend at the Harding Multi and Invitational.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two-day meet consisted of the heptathlon and decathlon Friday, March 17, and the rest of the track and field events Saturday, March 18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This meet was the first meet the teams hosted at their new facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe just started practicing there a couple of weeks ago,\u201d senior Jenna Akins said. \u201cIt&#8217;s amazing. Everything is just very new, and so it&#8217;s fun to break it in and also just be in a place where everything&#8217;s up to date.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Akins said in the old practice facility, it was difficult to do a full workout because the space was in close proximity to the football facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s been nice to do everything to its full capacity and work as hard as we can,\u201d Akins said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Akins added that the new facility is not just beneficial for Harding athletes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;ll be exciting even for the other athletes who come because any new facility is good to run on because it&#8217;s not worn,\u201d Akins said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senior Sierra White said she was also excited to use the facility.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;ve gotten used to practicing and we&#8217;re ready to actually compete on it,\u201d White said. \u201cI&#8217;m specifically excited for the pole vault side of it because now we have a pole vault pit that can go any direction that we need it to go. \u2026 You don&#8217;t have to worry about wind or things like that causing problems with the actual track.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senior Dak Bush said the new track felt fast, and the new setup made a difference in the atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe best part is that the fans get to sit closer to the athletes,\u201d Bush said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Akins said home meets are always special because it provides more of an opportunity for the Harding community to come support the team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s on our home ground,\u201d Akins said. \u201cWe want to not only show our competitors what we&#8217;re capable of, but the rest of the Harding community \u2026 They can come and watch, and faculty members and students can come, and our friends can come watch.
