{"id":17350,"date":"2022-11-17T21:01:24","date_gmt":"2022-11-18T03:01:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/?p=17350"},"modified":"2022-11-17T22:16:04","modified_gmt":"2022-11-18T04:16:04","slug":"__trashed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/2022\/11\/17\/__trashed\/","title":{"rendered":"Events held in Searcy community to honor veterans"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Photo by Jeff Montgomery <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The American Studies Institute (ASI) held its annual Veteran\u2019s Day breakfast on Nov. 11 in Cone Chapel to honor veterans in the Harding community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. John Richard Duke, director of ASI, said the breakfast included a little program and focused on showing gratitude to those who have served.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat we try to do with the Veteran\u2019s Day breakfast every year is just honor people who served,\u201d Duke said. \u201cWe essentially just want to say thank you for your service, and so we have a little program, and we just try to do exactly that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Duke said this event is important for a variety of reasons, and those reasons differ for different people, but the importance always centers around gratitude for service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd for some people, it\u2019s a personal story that makes it important,\u201d Duke said. \u201cFor others, it might be just some sort of broader understanding of why it\u2019s important. And so I think there is a thing for every individual. It might be different as to what makes it important, but I think really just what\u2019s important to do is to just make sure that people understand that we\u2019re thankful for their service and that we honor and respect that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Duke said honoring those who have served is a part of ASI and the institute\u2019s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAn important part of the American Studies Institute for a long time is honoring veterans, and so we just continue that tradition, continue to show that importance,\u201d Duke said. \u201cSo I think that it\u2019s something we\u2019ve all done for a long time, and we think it\u2019s important to continue to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sophomore Elizabeth Fisher, U.S. Army Cadet, had attended the breakfast before with her family, but this year was her first time attending as an active service member with the &nbsp;Reserve Officers&#8217; Training Corps. Fisher said the speakers for the breakfast are always good and that students get the opportunity to serve the veterans breakfast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very encouraging to go as someone beginning their time in the military to watch the veterans share stories and build each other up,\u201d Fisher said. \u201cIt\u2019s important to support the veteran community as a group [that] often goes underserved and in need.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another event that was held for veterans in the Searcy community was the sixth annual \u201cSalute Our Vets\u201d car show on Nov. 12. The event was sponsored by Gregg Orr Toyota, and proceeds went toward Feed the Vets, a food bank in Cabot, Arkansas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is a great event to support our local veterans,\u201d a Facebook post from Orr Toyota said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Awards were given for Best of Show, Veterans\u2019 Choice, Participants\u2019 Choice, Orr Toyota\u2019s Choice and Farthest Distance Traveled.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Photo by Jeff Montgomery The American Studies Institute (ASI) held its annual Veteran\u2019s Day breakfast on Nov. 11 in Cone Chapel to honor veterans in the Harding community.
