Men\u2019s and women\u2019s head coach Dustin Howell said the men\u2019s team has had its best start in program history.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur team is highly ranked in the region and is 26th in the nation in scoring,\u201d Howell said. \u201cWe currently have five guys averaging below par.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of these players is freshman Manuel Cue Vargas, who received the second Great American Conference (GAC) Men\u2019s golfer of the week award of the fall 2022 season. During the same week, freshman Pilar Martinez Salas received the GAC Women\u2019s golfer of the week award.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI feel very, very good about how I played this season,\u201d Vargas said. \u201cI won the first tournament that I played as a freshman with 14 shots under par.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The women\u2019s golf team has competed in several national tournaments this season and has done well despite the tough competition. Junior Alicia Mart\u00ednez Ortu\u00f1o<strong> <\/strong>is grateful for the experience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo far, I have played in four tournaments, and some of the rounds that I have played are good, and others are not, but it has helped me to know what I need to work on for the next season,\u201d Ortu\u00f1o said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ortu\u00f1o also said she appreciated how close-knit the golf team is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cWhat I love the most about being on the golf team are the friendships that you make with your teammates and the opportunities to meet other people from around the world,\u201d Ortu\u00f1o said. \u201cThanks to being on the golf team, I met two of my best friends from college.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Junior Sam Tandy, who placed in the top 10 in all four tournaments, said he also enjoys spending time with his teammates.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe team is 75% international,\u201d Tandy said. \u201cI love learning new things about their culture as they learn things about my culture. My teammates keep my experience at Harding exciting and always push me to be better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both the men\u2019s and women\u2019s golf teams have been successful this season. The men\u2019s team finished their four-tournament season on Oct. 18 with one win and two second-place finishes.
