{"id":16989,"date":"2022-03-31T19:43:08","date_gmt":"2022-04-01T01:43:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/?p=16989"},"modified":"2022-04-07T14:02:47","modified_gmt":"2022-04-07T20:02:47","slug":"copyeditors-go-on-strike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/2022\/03\/31\/copyeditors-go-on-strike\/","title":{"rendered":"Copyeditors go on strike"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Photo by Madison Meyer<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI quit!\u201d yelled Mr. Gabriel Grant Huff, who is the Assistant Copyeditor for the <em>Bison<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <em>Bison<\/em> Head Copyeditor, Miss Caroline Birdwell, explained that every week she always ends up having to do more than what her job descriptoin originally spelled out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Birdwell: \u201cBeing a copyeditor means I have to work around everyone else\u2019s schedules and procrastinatoins. Now, that\u2019s not always too bad, but on the weekly occasoin when someone turns in a half written story, it becomes exhausting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the first of April, 2022, the <em>Bison<\/em> Newspapers\u2019 copyediting staff announced they would be going on strike until their working conditoins improve, affective immediately. The 3 workers held picket signs outside the Student Publicatoins office with the catchphrase \u201cDo Better\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Assistant Copyeditor Mr. Gabriel Grant Huff refused to comment on the situatoin. \u201cI am going on strike, don\u2019t publish anything I say,\u201d said Gabriel when I asked him to come back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOff the record, I hate it when writers use the word \u2018that\u2019 too much in their stories.\u201d Gabriel said. He said that writers don\u2019t understand that he has to put in all the work that is necessary to getting the <em>Bison<\/em> printed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Birdwell complained that the same errors always appear every week, no matter how many times she corrects them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEveryone knows it\u2019s supposed to be \u2018Claxton\u2019 instead of \u2018Clatxon,\u2019\u201d said Birwdell. \u201cYou should see the amount of mistakes that are in stories when we first get them. It\u2019s a thankless job.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Editorial Assistant Miss Cianna Jay explained that she puts in so much work every week but rarely feels rewarded for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter all the long hours we spend editing, what do we get in return? Oxford commas,\u201d&nbsp; said Jay. \u201cDozens of them.
