Junior Coulton Doyle, first baseman for the Harding baseball team, was awarded Great American Conference (GAC) Co-Player of the Week Feb. 16.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The award was announced during the second week of the season after an outstanding week on the diamond by Doyle. The 20-year-old is batting with a .292 batting average, 12 runners batted in and five home runs through seven games. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been really hot here lately, and that\u2019s a big confidence booster going into the rest of the season,\u201d Doyle said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doyle is entering his third season with the Bisons, but injuries to his hand kept him on the bench during the 2020-21 seasons. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNot playing for two years and getting hurt was really hard,\u201d Doyle said. \u201cIt\u2019s refreshing to come back and see it coming all together.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Assistant baseball coach Zach Beasley praised the hard work that Doyle had to put in to get back into the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOver those two years where he was battling injuries, he never quit working,\u201d Beasley said. \u201cHe worked while he waited, and you\u2019re seeing that hard work and consistency paying off this last week.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doyle has worked hard to get back into baseball, and head coach Patrick McGaha said his work ethic is what winning the Player of the Week award shows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHis work ethic is outstanding,\u201d McGaha said. \u201cBecause of the time and effort he has put in practicing hitting, it is paying off with success at the plate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That hard work could be seen throughout the fall and the spring pre-season. The hard work has led to the team having confidence in him and confidence in the team itself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe all have a lot of confidence in Coulton,\u201d Beasley said. \u201cTo see him get off to a hot start definitely [builds] confidence in him and builds up the team\u2019s confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Baseball players are often superstitious when it comes to maintaining streaks. Some will do the same pre-game ritual or have the same walk-up routine before they hit \u2014 anything to keep the streak alive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doyle said he has a specific pre-at-bat, and a pre-game routine that he has found to work well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI take three practice swings with a bat weight and take a deep breath,\u201d Doyle said. \u201cIn pre-game, I try to sit and clear my mind of all distractions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doyle said the biggest thing that he can stress to be successful is being consistent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy personal opinion is that you don\u2019t hit home runs when you are trying to hit home runs,\u201d Doyle said. \u201cI try to stay through the middle and keep my swing short when I am batting.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is Doyle\u2019s first time being GAC Player of the Week. The baseball team\u2019s next game is today in Searcy against Southeastern Oklahoma State University.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
