{"id":16606,"date":"2021-12-09T15:15:36","date_gmt":"2021-12-09T21:15:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/?p=16606"},"modified":"2022-01-21T12:31:14","modified_gmt":"2022-01-21T18:31:14","slug":"music-department-hosts-holiday-concerts-as-semester-ends","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/2021\/12\/09\/music-department-hosts-holiday-concerts-as-semester-ends\/","title":{"rendered":"Music Department hosts holiday concerts as semester ends"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Written by Ben Lane<\/em> | <em>Photo by Caroline Palmer<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Harding University Department of Music hosted three concerts between Dec. 2-6 in collaboration with several of Harding\u2019s ensembles and First United Methodist Church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Holiday Spectacular concert (Dec. 2), concert choir Christmas concert (Dec. 4) and chorus and orchestra concert (Dec. 6) were the three concerts held.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Susan Shirel, director of choral activities, said the Holiday Spectacular concert was designed to feature a broad spectrum of the Music Department\u2019s scope. The concert included five unique ensembles: the string quartet, brass quartet, jazz band, percussion ensemble and chamber singers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s something there for everybody\u2019s pallet,\u201d Shirel said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last Saturday, the Concert Choir Christmas concert was performed at First United Methodist Church by the concert choir and was accompanied by First United Methodist organist Ryan Russell.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a real opportunity for people from the community to come hear [concert choir] perform,\u201d Shirel said. \u201cIt\u2019s exciting to get to share what we do with not just people here on our campus, but with a broader context.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, the concert choir Christmas concert was canceled due to COVID-19, and subsequently, this is Shirel\u2019s first year to direct the show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt has been so encouraging to see the Department of Music come back to life after the many limitations we dealt with last year,\u201d Music Department chair Dr. Jay Walls said. \u201cIt seems like we hit the onramp at full speed with a super busy agenda this fall, but the students have performed with the utmost professionalism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Monday evening, the chorus and orchestra \u201cFeast of Carols\u201d concert took place in the Anthony Wright Administration Building. These concerts provide a means for students to experience and perform masterworks, which are well known pieces within culture. The larger performances, especially that of the concert choir Christmas concert, allow for this to take place.
