{"id":15550,"date":"2020-12-10T20:23:38","date_gmt":"2020-12-11T02:23:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/?p=15550"},"modified":"2021-01-21T20:06:12","modified_gmt":"2021-01-22T02:06:12","slug":"different-families-different-traditions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/2020\/12\/10\/different-families-different-traditions\/","title":{"rendered":"Different families, different traditions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Every year, families cherish traditions that are unique to their household.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sophomore Ryan Simpson said he enjoys celebrating Christmas with his family after Thanksgiving night. After leftovers are eaten, the Simpsons enjoy putting up their Christmas tree as they sing along to Christmas music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know when we started it, but we\u2019ve done that every year for as long as I can remember,\u201d Simpson said. \u201cIt\u2019s been something my family looks forward to every Thanksgiving to start getting into the Christmas spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Simpsons also enjoy decorating Christmas cookies together. Simpson explained that his mom bakes a large batch of cookies cut out as candy canes, snowflakes, snowmen and Christmas trees. Then, his family decorates the cookies together with different colored icing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know when that originated, but I\u2019m pretty sure my mom got that sugar cookie recipe from her mom, so it\u2019s been in our family for a while,\u201d Simpson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Junior Kate Hutson said she also enjoys making Christmas cookies with her family. The Hutsons bake cookies on Christmas Eve and are always sure to have a puzzle laying around somewhere to solve, Hutson said. On Christmas morning, after getting ready for the day, they open presents from oldest to youngest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSomething that I\u2019ve always liked, though, is before we eat, we wait for everyone to sit down and then we pray,\u201d Hutson said. \u201cWe have always done it that way, but I\u2019m not sure where it originated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hutson said she believes they pray together to show respect for the quality time their family experiences as they gather together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is a good way for us to all join together,\u201d Hutson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sophomore Thomas Burke and his family choose an alternative meal for their Christmas dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAll of my siblings were really picky eaters growing up, so something like a traditional Christmas dinner just wouldn&#8217;t make anyone happy,\u201d Burke said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, Burke said his mom had them write a list of favorite foods to eat for the dinner, allowing everyone to enjoy Christmas dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt would always turn out very eclectic and very fun,\u201d Burke said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Burke said the meal helps his family avoid fighting over what to eat and brings a lot of personality to their family time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Every year, families cherish traditions that are unique to their household.
