{"id":15020,"date":"2020-09-24T18:53:36","date_gmt":"2020-09-25T00:53:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/?p=15020"},"modified":"2020-10-01T20:27:05","modified_gmt":"2020-10-02T02:27:05","slug":"student-releases-self-produced-ep","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/2020\/09\/24\/student-releases-self-produced-ep\/","title":{"rendered":"Student releases self-produced EP"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Junior Maddy Hall released her own<strong> <\/strong>Extended Play (EP) album titled, \u201cFrom This Hour\u201d named after one of Walt Witmans\u2019s poems. Hall wrote all the songs in a five-day period while she was at home over the summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI just don\u2019t want to be scared to be bad,\u201d Hall said. \u201cI want to embrace the fact that I don\u2019t know what I\u2019m doing \u2014 to make mistakes and work from there \u2014 instead of never doing anything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hall said that during quarantine, she was trying to challenge herself creatively, so she wrote one song every day.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She wanted her music to be homemade.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The collection of five songs were recorded in one take on Hall\u2019s back porch. Each song was written, performed and mixed by Hall using minimal equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I think about working with Maddy, I think about the story,\u201d senior Laura Weber said. \u201cMaking music isn\u2019t just about making music \u2014 it\u2019s about the whole story that goes along with it.You get to say, \u2018Hey, I did this on my porch, and I had such a good time doing it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Weber, a friend of Hall\u2019s, was inspired by the idea of not being scared to be bad.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think she just hit the point where she started to wonder why she was holding herself back from being creative because of&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>people\u2019s opinions, so she just created the album,\u201d Weber said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hall created an Instagram account a year before releasing the EP in which she posted poetry, writings and songs that she created. The account was made for the art that she would not post on a main account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI realized that there is such a freedom that comes from recognizing that your art doesn\u2019t have to be perfect to share with people,\u201d Hall said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Weber and Hall have created songs together before. The pair sat down and wrote an album last fall, but it quickly turned into something that they both found fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wanted to see if, on a really ridiculous budget, not knowing what I was doing, if I could have fun making something, and I did,\u201d Hall said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hall is known to her friends as poetic and wise, and she also carries that reputation into the classroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMaddy is really a young poet,\u201d assistant professor of Bible and ministry Mac Sandlin said. \u201cHer poetry is always so ambitious. She is always reaching for something is new.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sandlin has had Hall in class multiple times since her freshman year. The professor said that Hall is creative in all aspects of her life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFrom This Hour\u201d is a five-song collection that Hall wrote for the exemplification of art, whether good or bad.
