{"id":14889,"date":"2020-09-04T08:15:50","date_gmt":"2020-09-04T14:15:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/?p=14889"},"modified":"2020-09-10T21:03:29","modified_gmt":"2020-09-11T03:03:29","slug":"harding-sports-covid-19-plan-b-harding-athletics-are-taking-a-backseat-to-coronavirus-regulations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/2020\/09\/04\/harding-sports-covid-19-plan-b-harding-athletics-are-taking-a-backseat-to-coronavirus-regulations\/","title":{"rendered":"Harding sports: COVID-19 plan B: Harding athletics are taking a backseat to coronavirus regulations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Weeks before the semester began, Harding announced that Division II sports would be canceled for the fall semester.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While many are feeling the negative effects of canceled athletics, a few leaders on campus are choosing to take the adversity with a grain of salt and use this time to work harder than before.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt became nearly impossible to try to compete,\u201d Harding athletic director and men\u2019s head basketball coach Jeff Morgan said. \u201cTrying to go down that road with most of the DII conferences across the country . . . the mandates made it nearly impossible to play other people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Morgan, who is entering his second year as Harding\u2019s athletic director, shared his plans for what athletics will look like in 2020, even without official games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe all have a tremendous desire to compete,\u201d Morgan said. \u201cWe are still going to be able to practice, because we&#8217;re not playing with outside competition. We\u2019re going to be able to do some things as far as practice and player development, and then getting into our off-season work.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Morgan is making plans for the whole university, Harding football coach Paul Simmons is working on a game plan for his team<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou have lots of excuses to be lazy and unaccountable,\u201d Simmons said. \u201cOur guys have had a mature response to that. The level of accountability has been so impressive. Our guys have a great desire to be together; we really just love to be together.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even before COVID-19, Simmons said he prioritized teaching his team the importance of community.<br>\u201cWe really plan to double down on the things that matter most to us,\u201d Simmons said. \u201cThat is culture. That is building brotherhood. That is deepening the love that our guys have for one another \u2026 I plan to come out of this as the deepest, most polished team we\u2019ve ever had. I expect the 2021 Bisons to be a really dominant football team.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following Simmons\u2019s philosophy is one of his seniors, wide receiver Michael Cendrick.
