{"id":14325,"date":"2020-02-14T15:52:27","date_gmt":"2020-02-14T21:52:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/?p=14325"},"modified":"2021-04-19T14:48:01","modified_gmt":"2021-04-19T20:48:01","slug":"social-club-dedicates-field-house-seat-in-memory-of-former-member","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/2020\/02\/14\/social-club-dedicates-field-house-seat-in-memory-of-former-member\/","title":{"rendered":"Social club dedicates field house seat in memory of former member"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Women\u2019s social club Delta Gamma Rho (DGR) planned the dedication of a seat in Rhodes-Reaves Field House to former club member Mary Joy Uebelein.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Uebelein was a huge fan of basketball, especially the Harding men\u2019s basketball team, before she died on March 16, 2019, due to a car accident on March 8.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jada Robison, a close friend of Uebelein\u2019s, said Mary Joy\u2019s abundant love for sports, particularly the St. Louis Cardinals and the San Antonio Spurs, wouldn\u2019t make sense to many people \u2014 but it made sense to Uebelein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> \u201cShe was always one of the boys,\u201d Robison said. \u201cPretty much all her guy friends were on the basketball team, and she was at every game.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Club member and fellow St. Louis resident Emma Vaughn was the driving force behind this dedication. Vaughn said if this dedication didn\u2019t happen now then it wouldn\u2019t have happened at all, since Uebelein would have been an older member and new club members wouldn\u2019t know her. She wanted to do something to honor Uebelein before graduating this spring. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very excited,\u201d Vaughn said. \u201cIt\u2019s something we wanted to cement her legacy here on campus.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The dedication will be presented Feb. 20 at halftime during the men\u2019s basketball game. Members of the Uebelein family will come out to the court, and the seat will be marked with flowers. Vaughn made sure that the seat would be visible and hold a lot of meaning.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wanted it to be a good seat that you could see very well,\u201d Vaughn said. \u201cI made sure it was behind the boys\u2019 bench, because that was a good spot where she could see the boys and the whole game. The number 14 was her jersey number for DGR, so we picked number 14 for it.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although this dedication can never fully represent the kind of person Uebelein was, President of DGR Laken Reddell said she hopes this dedication helps people to remember her as she was.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI hope this dedication really shows and makes an impact on the community of Harding,\u201d Reddell said. \u201cJust to remember Mary Joy for who she was.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Club members encouraged everyone to attend the basketball game on Feb. 20 to show support for the team and the family.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI really want people to just show up to the game even if you didn\u2019t know her,\u201d Vaughn said. \u201cOne, that\u2019s supporting the basketball team, and two, that\u2019s just supporting her family in a way that isn\u2019t super intimate but something they will really appreciate.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Women\u2019s social club Delta Gamma Rho (DGR) planned the dedication of a seat in Rhodes-Reaves Field House to former club member Mary Joy Uebelein.
