{"id":14094,"date":"2020-01-24T14:48:59","date_gmt":"2020-01-24T20:48:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/?p=14094"},"modified":"2020-03-05T10:50:53","modified_gmt":"2020-03-05T16:50:53","slug":"holiday-movie-round-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/2020\/01\/24\/holiday-movie-round-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Holiday movie round-up"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>For award-winning filmmaker and associate professor of communication Dr. Chuck Bane, there is nothing like watching a movie for the first time in a theater.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Complete strangers come together, not to watch a film, but to experience the lives of characters projected on the screen. Bane claimed that a good movie theater experience is defined by the film\u2019s ability to transport the audience to another time and place that has never been experienced before.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cThere\u2019s something about that,\u201d Bane said. \u201cBeing with a group and laughing together, being scared together, and being whisked away together.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In 2019, films such as \u201cLittle Women\u201d <\/strong><strong>and \u201cThe Irishman\u201d were critically acclaimed <\/strong><strong>for their ability to flawlessly share the gut-wrenching stories of family and hardship. Senior Meals Martin expressed her excitement for the film adaption of her favorite book, \u201cLittle Women.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cI think a lot of [female empowerment films] can get the stories told wrong,\u201d Martin said. \u201cI think sometimes, behind the scenes, men are actually writing the women\u2019s story.\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Martin said she thought it was clever and refreshing for the main character\u2019s story not to be dependent on a man.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Film Club president Caleb Manor praised the excellence of Martin Scorsese\u2019s \u201cTh<\/strong><strong>e Irishman\u201d and the brilliant work that went into the three-hour gangster drama.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cI think [Scorsese\u2019s] command over filmmaking and the pace of the film really makes [the movie] worth it,\u201d Manor said. \u201cYou can\u2019t go wrong with Scorsese.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Other films like \u201cStar Wars: The Rise of Skywalker\u201d were given poor ratings by Rotten Tomatoes for their \u201clack of imagination,\u201d while \u201cCats\u201d was accused of using too much imagination. Manor sat through the entirety <\/strong><strong>of \u201cCats\u201d to see why the film was receiving such low ratings.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cI didn\u2019t want to see [\u2018Cats\u2019], but when I saw that it was getting universally trashed, I thought to myself, \u2018I\u2019ve got to see this before it becomes a meme,\u2019\u201d Manor said. \u201cNow I have nightmares about \u2018Cats.\u2019\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cStar Wars: The Rise of Skywalker\u201d rece<\/strong><strong>ived backlash from fans who claimed the film was aiming to please a small fanboy base. Bane said he was worried when Disney bought the rights to Star Wars in 2012 because they are known to sell out. Double film minor Mike Zeringue shared similar concerns<\/strong><strong> for the film and was not pleased with the outcome.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cI thought \u2018Rise of Skywalker\u2019 was the most disappointing film of 2019,\u201d Zeringue said.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>However, Zeringue believes the worst movie of 2019 was \u201cAvengers: Endgame\u201d because of Disney\u2019s lack of creativity. Zeringue was disappointed in the film\u2019s shortage of high stakes and poor execution.
