{"id":13931,"date":"2019-11-08T10:10:37","date_gmt":"2019-11-08T16:10:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/?p=13931"},"modified":"2019-11-15T06:53:10","modified_gmt":"2019-11-15T12:53:10","slug":"setting-the-pace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/2019\/11\/08\/setting-the-pace\/","title":{"rendered":"Setting the Pace"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sophomore Layne Pace ran the St. George Utah Marathon in October, beating her personal record by seven minutes, so it\u2019s only fitting she would start a club to mentor young runners and share her skills at Harding Academy.<\/p>\n<p>Through an after-school program called Extracurricular Classes in Arts, Technology and Sciences (E-CATS), Pace teaches elementary school students how to push themselves through running. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now, I have four girls and one boy [in the club], but it\u2019s hard because kids don\u2019t really know how to run distance yet, so it\u2019s a lot of kids strung out everywhere because they\u2019re all at different paces,\u201d Pace said. \u201cI\u2019m just trying to teach them how to consistently run, how to enjoy it, how to do it as a team, and really just how to encourage each other when they think they can\u2019t do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shannon King, is director of the Academic Support and Enrichment Centers at Hardign Academy, and asked Pace to help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy job is to come up with classes and then fill those positions, and occasionally I\u2019ll teach one,\u201d King said. \u201cI knew [Pace] loved running and knew she wanted to mentor young runners, especially female runners, like empowering them in the future. We\u2019re family friends, and this summer I basically asked, \u2018Hey, would you be interested?\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Pace\u2019s friend, sophomore Caily Moore, said Pace is a behind the scenes leader and has a sense of humility most people do not have.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was actually unaware of the running club Layne started until I recently saw a Facebook post about it,\u201d Moore said. \u201cThis just shows how humble she is about it.
