Included in that thought process is finding a job for the school year. One possibility is finding a job on campus.

There are many students who work for the university every year. One of those students is senior Bowman Johnson. As a student worker for Harding’s admissions office Johnson has said working on campus has been a positive experience.

“Being able to go in and work since I’m already on campus most of the day has been a huge blessing.” Johnson said. “It’s just so much easier for me to schedule my time for work and school life.”

Johnson has worked for admissions since his sophomore year and said one of the best parts of his job was that he was able to work directly with the recruiters and build relationships with them over the year.

Junior Mitch Spann currently works for ARAMARK’s catering service and said the benefits of working on campus have outweighed any costs.

“For starters, I don’t have to waste any money on gas so I can stretch my paycheck further,” Spann said.

Spann also mentioned the convenience of already being familiar with his work setting and the perk of having a student discount.

“They treat you so well,” Spann said. “It can be hard work, but it is well worth it.”

The process of getting a job on campus starts at the Center for Student Success. Director of the Career Center, Butch Gardner, said students can come pick up job applications and get help setting up a Handshake account at their office.

Handshake is a job network that Harding uses to post all of its’ campus jobs. The site includes a list of all pertinent information for available jobs including how and where to apply, and desired qualifications for those jobs.

Gardner said the benefits of working on campus go beyond just being able to walk to work. They also help develop “soft skills” that will prove beneficial in a professional setting.

“By soft skills, we mean such things as developing a strong work ethic, learning to work with others, customer service and professional phone etiquette, just to name a few.” Gardner said.

To find job postings, go to the Career Center, located above the student center, or sign up for a Handshake account at https://harding.joinhandshake.com/login.

As another school year comes to a close, it is already time to start thinking about the fall semester.
